As we plan new bike trails and work on maintaining our go-to single track trails on the River’s Edge Trail it reminds us of an epic biking story we had to share.
The 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps (Iron Riders’) famous trip from Montana to Missouri.
Just before the start of the 20th century and automobiles rise, the world was fixated on cycling as a means of mobility. So a group was formed by the Army to test the efficiency of transporting troops by bicycles with a cross country trek.
The route took them across five states: Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska and Missouri. The Iron Riders’ had to cross rivers, often carrying their bicycles over their heads.
The trek was 1,900 miles and took 41 days! Learn more about this epic journey here: The Black Buffalo Soldiers Who Biked Across the American West
