2010 River’s Edge Trail Goals

We look forward to working with the City of Great Falls, MT Department of Transportation, MT FWP, other partners, engineers and contractors to complete these long-awaited projects.

  • Complete construction of the new concrete trail between Garden Home Park and West Bank Park using American Recovery & Reinvestment Act funding. The trail will include underpasses of the BNSF, 1st Ave. N. and Weissman bridges and replace deteriorating asphalt trail between the Missouri River Courthouse and West Bank Park with concrete. We think this is going to be the most exciting and beautiful section of trail yet.

  • Provide matching funds and implement a State Trails Grant to pave the new trail between Upper River Road and 13th Ave. S. through Warden Park, install memorial benches and tables and work with the City and Habitat for Humanity to add a viewing pavilion on top.

  • Match and implement a PPL Montana River Fund grant to overlay an imbedded section of old railroad track at the merge of the roadway and trail approach to Black Eagle Memorial Island and add a public drinking fountain north of the island.

  • Match and implement a Community Transportation Enhancement Program grant to solicit input from the bicycle community, transportation professionals and others to identify priority Bike Routes and then install new signage on those selected Routes.

  • Work with community partners to design and install upgraded trail signs that will provide destination and distance information at entry points and intersections of the trail. These new signs will be appreciated by residents and visitors alike.

We plan to work with many partners in 2010 to:

  • Select a preferred alignment for a new trail to fill the gap between Black Eagle Memorial Island and the North Shore Trail at Rainbow Dam. Prepare plans for both a paved accessible trail and a single track trail and identify priority segments that could be designed and built with various trail grants.

  • Continue to work with local and state transportation planners to select alternative alignments to link the existing trail system to Fox Farm and southwest neighborhoods and begin searching for funding to design and construct the preferred route.

  • Work with community donors and the Leadership Great Falls Class of 2009 to locate, acquire and place some great outdoor art and sculpture along the trail.

  • Continue to work with Scouts, youth and community service groups and individual volunteers to perform spring and summer cleanup and assist agencies with trail grooming, weed control, maintenance, tree planting and special projects during the year.

Help make 2010 another amazing year for
River’s Edge Trail!
